Almost 400 years have passed since Kakiemon I wrote ‘Akae Hatsuri no “Kaku”’ in the middle of the 17th century and the history of one porcelain style, the Kakiemon style, began. The travelling exhibition ‘Kakiemon in Everyday Life’ is currently being held in Tokyo, Paris and New York, exhibiting and selling works from such traditional Kakiemon kilns and the 15th Kakiemon Sakaida, who represents Arita ware in Arita, Saga Prefecture, with each piece styled with furniture.

“Beauty in Everyday Life” — Tokyo, Paris, New York Exhibition Series—

Around 400 years have passed since the mid-17th century, when the first Kakiemon documented “Notes on the Beginnings of Akae” , marking the beginning of a unique porcelain tradition known as the Kakiemon style. A series of exhibitions titled “Kakiemon in Daily Life” is currently being held, featuring works by the traditional Kakiemon Kiln and the 15th-generation Sakaida Kakiemon, a representative of Arita ware from Saga Prefecture.

These exhibitions showcase Kakiemon porcelain styled alongside furniture,blending tradition with modern living, and are being presented for both display and sale in Tokyo, Paris, and New York.

The works of “Kakiemon,” highly regarded both domestically and internationally, feature Japanese-style paintings delicately rendered in overglaze enamels on the soft, warm milkywhite Nigoshide porcelain. This iconic style of Arita polychrome porcelain has been passed down through generations and is now carried on by the 15th-generation Kakiemon.

The “Kakiemon in Daily Life” exhibition, held at AREA Tokyo, AREA Paris, and AREA NewYork, showcases the unique appeal of Kakiemon porcelain in collaboration with the Kakiemon Kiln’s Tokyo store. Through the distinctive approach of the interior brand AREA, the exhibition highlights new ways to appreciate the timeless beauty of Kakiemon.

While enjoying the delight of incorporating teaware and vases into daily life is wonderful,there is often a hesitation to use such precious items for everyday purposes. However, the exquisite beauty unique to Japanese paintings, the refined colors, and the masterful craftsmanship imbued in these pieces create an extraordinary presence when displayed as interior decor. The result is a strikingly beautiful space that elevates its surroundings.Furniture like dining tables and sideboards paired with the milky white porcelain create astunning harmony, offering a unique fusion of “everyday spaces × traditional crafts,” curated by AREA.

This special event invites visitors to explore how these pieces can complement contemporary interiors, offering a new experiential proposal of Japanese culture to the world,courtesy of AREA.Beginning at AREA Tokyo, the exhibition features around 20 pieces, including vases crafted using the Nigoshide technique, designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property. Since the displayed works are also available for purchase, the exhibition layout may change throughout the event period.
